On the Trail Camp Unalayee's wilderness location is a natural backdrop for Camp's featured activity, our back-packing program. There are over fifteen beautiful alpine lakes within seven miles of camp. Each hike offers a unique chance to venture into a pristine wilderness environment.
Our basic camp program includes two back-packing trips. The first hike is a three-day hike (Tribe Hike) taken with the camper's tribe to a destination chosen by the group. The second hike (Choice Hike) is a four day hike. For the Choice Hike campers choose a hike based on their interests and abilities. These hikes may focus on a special destination, such as a distant peak or lake, a have a certain tempo -- slow and easy, or fast and rugged. The hikes may be based on a special activity such as fishing, swimming, rock climbing, or even gourmet trail cooking.
While on the trail each camper is expected to share the chores and help carry food and supplies. Out on the trail there is time for quiet thought, wildlife study and even music and song. After a long day's hike sleep may be the most appreciated activity of all.
For campers who want a longer trail experience, we offer our Trail Tribes. These expeditions are for children who are in good physical condition. These hikes will stretch hiking legs and explore remote terrain in nearby locales such as the Russian and Marble Mountains Wilderness Areas. These extended trips often focus on developing primitive and outdoor living skills.
